Aesthetic Differences
Biceps Implants
Biceps implants primarily improve the appearance of the front of the arm. They:
- Increase the fullness of the upper arm when viewed from the front.
- Can create a more prominent biceps peak.
- Produce the greatest visual change when the elbow is flexed.
- Are best for patients with naturally narrow or underdeveloped biceps.
The enhancement is often subtle in relaxed positions because the biceps are less prominent when the arm hangs at the side.
Triceps Implants
Triceps implants create a much larger increase in upper arm circumference because they augment the largest muscle of the upper arm. They:
- Increase arm thickness from both the side and back.
- Improve the characteristic horseshoe contour of the triceps.
- Make the arm appear muscular even when relaxed.
- Better fill out short sleeves.
For many patients, triceps implants provide the greatest improvement in overall arm size.
Which Implant Looks Bigger?
For implants of similar thickness:
- Triceps implants usually produce a greater increase in arm circumference.
- Biceps implants produce a more localized contour enhancement.
This is because the triceps occupy nearly two-thirds of the upper arm.
Surgical Considerations
Both procedures use hidden incisions near the axilla (armpit), but the surgery differs anatomically.
Biceps implants
- Easier surgical access.
- Less dissection.
- Important to protect the musculocutaneous nerve.
Triceps implants
- Larger implant pockets.
- Careful attention to the radial nerve and posterior arm anatomy.
- Slightly longer operative time.
Recovery
Recovery is similar for both procedures:
- Mild to moderate discomfort for the first week.
- Compression garment for several weeks.
- Return to light activities in about 1–2 weeks.
- Avoid heavy upper-body lifting for approximately 6 weeks.
Patients with triceps implants often notice more discomfort during activities requiring elbow extension, while those with biceps implants notice it more during forceful elbow flexion.
Which Procedure Gives the Best Overall Result?
If the goal is maximum upper arm size, triceps implants generally have the greater impact.
If the goal is a more athletic, front-facing appearance, biceps implants can be very effective.
For the most balanced and natural-looking enhancement, combining biceps and triceps implants often provides the best result. Augmenting both muscle groups increases arm circumference while maintaining harmonious muscular proportions from the front, side, and back.
From an aesthetic standpoint, if only one implant is chosen, triceps implants usually produce the more dramatic overall transformation, whereas biceps implants provide the more recognizable “bodybuilder” contour when the arm is flexed.
