It isn’t very often that a large corporation takes on a complete name change. This is particularly rare in the medical world with a hospital system. But that is exactly what is happening this month in the Clarian Health System. Since 1997, Clarian Health has existed as a core set of downtown Indianapolis hospitals, Methodist, University, and Riley Hospital for Children. Since its inception it has also acquired over a dozen hospitals around the state, creating the largest statewide hospital system and the only one closely aligned with the Indiana University School of Medicine.

Despite having multiple locations across the state, however, the Clarian name doesn’t resonate with much familiarity outside of Indianapolis. After undertaking a large market research study, Clarian is launching an historic name change to more clearly define its mission and statewide focus.  Clarian will change its name to Indiana University Health effective this month. Indiana University Health will better identify Clarian’s unique brand of nationally recognized health care, reinforce its partnership with Indiana University and the IU School of Medicine, which provides patients with access to innovative research and treatments, and better reflect the breadth of its mission. Each and every hospital in the system will change their names as well with Indiana University (IU) Health preceding the hospital location in most cases.

As I have two plastic surgery practices in suburban Clarian locations, this name will affect the two hospitals where these facilities exist. My northside Indianapolis location at Clarian North Medical Center in Carmel will change its name to Indiana University (IU) Health North Hospital. My westside Indianapolis location at Clarian West Medical Center in Avon will change its name to Indiana University (IU) Health West Hospital.

While a hospital name change can initially be confusing for patients, the practice phone numbers (IU Health North 317.814.4100, IIU Health West 317.217.2200), the website (www.eppleyplasticsurgery.com) and the email address, info@eppleyplasticsurgery.com will remain the same. It will take some time before GPS locaters will be able to identify the hospital locations by these new names however.

As the Clarian name fades away and the Indiana University Health name emerges, we at Eppley Plastic Surgery look forward to providing plastic surgery procedures, innovations and service that is commensurate with this new bold vision.

Combination Gynecologic and Plastic Surgery Procedure at IU Health West Hospital in Avon, Indiana

As the field of medicine and surgery continues to advance, I am continually amazed at how different surgical procedures are being done, not only during the same surgery, but at exactly the same time. This is of great benefit to the patient and maximizes valuable operating room time and resources.

An example of such a case was on February 12, 2008 at the IU Health West Hospital in Avon, Indiana. A female patient was initially seen by me in Plastic Surgery for contouring of her arms to get rid of the flabby skin that inevitably results after a lot of weight loss.. She required formal arm lifts (brachioplasties) combined with liposuction of the area for improvement. She had a gynecologic issue with heavy bleeding and also needed a hysterectomy. The Gyn surgeon and myself worked out a time when we could do the surgery together. Because the operative fields were at ‘opposite ends’ so to speak, we were also able to work at the same time effectively cutting down the total operative time in half.

I have seen over the years a lot of different combinations of surgeries combined with plastic surgery, but a concurrent hysterectomy-arm lift is a new combination for me. When surgeons work together, patients benefit!

Joint Plastic and Hand Surgery at IU Health North Hospital

Over the past twenty-five years, I have had the opportunity to operate on hundreds of facial trauma patients and repair thousands of facial fractures. I have done so many over the years that I was a co-author on a major 1000 page textbook on facial trauma entitled, Maxillofacial Trauma and Esthetic Facial Reconstruction. Despite this extensive experience, I have never had the opportunity to do a facial fracture repair like I did last week at IU Health North Hospital in Carmel, Indiana.

I was asked to see a patient who fell at home while working and sustained fractures of his wrist and his face. When I saw the patient, his right side of his face was terribly swollen and his hand and wrist were in a cast. Working with an Orthopedic Surgeon, we coordinated a surgery for later that week in which we could repair both problems during the same surgery. Normally, surgeons may do their procedures during the same operation but rarely are surgeries performed concurrently at the same time. (we surgeons are territorial and like our space!) In an one and half-hour operation, this patient had his wrist and four facial bones repaired, not only saving him from having to undergo two separate surgeries on different days but cutting the normal time in surgery for these problems in half!

This joint effort provided a great service to the patient from which he was deeply appreciative.  While many complain about the inefficiency of modern medicine, this surgery case reminds me of its many benefits as well.

Joint Gynecological and Plastic Surgery makes Medical History at IU Health West Hospital with Dr Barry Eppley

Plastic Surgery is commonly performed as the reconstructive part of an operation with many surgical disciplines from General Surgery, Urology, Pediatric Surgery, Neurosurgery, Orthopedic Surgery as well as Obstetrics and Gynecology. It is rare, however, that cosmetic plastic surgery is done at the same time, on a different part of the body, with other surgical disciplines.

Such was the case on December 19, 2007 at IU Health West Hospital in Avon, Indiana. A 45 year-old female underwent a combined Gynecologic and Plastic Surgery operation. Dr. Kelly Kasper of IU Ob-Gyn performed a laparoscopic hysterectomy. During the one hour that it took her to complete the procedure, Dr Barry Eppley performed cosmetic surgery of the eyelids including removing excess skin and fat and tightening of the lower eyelids with a chemical peel. (lower eyelid lift) Both Gynecologic and Plastic Surgery were done at the same time in a one hour time period.

While neither operation is unusual, performing both at the same time is and, in my experience, has never been done at the same time before. Such coordination between surgeons allows wonderful benefits to be gained by patients in a cost-effective manner.

A Hospital-Based Spa – Integrating East and West

The past 10 years has seen a paradigm shift in plastic surgery with a large number of non-surgical office-based procedures for producing cosmetic changes. Botox, injectable fillers, LipoDissolve injections, light therapies, etc. have resulted in more office visits than any number of surgeries that could be performed. No longer is the plastic surgeon just a once-in-a-lifetime visit for simply having surgery. A visit to the plastic surgeon’s office today is done much more frequently…and usually not for surgery. This phenomenon, combined with an overall wellness or holistic approach to medicine, has created a unique opportunity to integrate or synergize all of these therapies and treatments in a single practice setting.

I created this change in 2004 to my practice by establishing the Ology Spa concept here in Indianapolis.
